“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”
Abraham Lincoln

Getting ready for your headshot should be easy. So here is some of my favorite information I have gathered in one spot to help your session be awesome! So take a look below and let’s get you going.

Ladies

  • I highly recommend using my professional makeup artists. If you want to do your own makeup there is a makeup station in my studio that you can use or come makeup ready. I recommend bringing your makeup for light touch ups during the session as well. Go very light from what you would normally apply and we can add more if we need to. It’s harder to remove makeup versus adding more. Light and natural looking makeup is the goal. Avoid contouring and over powdering the face. Avoid dark eye makeup and fake eyelashes. Try to keep lipstick close to a natural color and if you do not wear lipstick a non glossy lip moisturizer is ideal. It is very hard to photoshop dry chapped lips.
  • Exfoliate and moisturize the skin a few days before your session. Remove any hair from the face where foundation may be applied so it will apply correctly.
  • Keep your hair natural and well kept. You want to look like you on your best day but don’t over do it. Apply your normal hair care routine the day before and possibly add some light curls for a touch of volume. Don’t overdo it with curls they can tend to take over if curled too much. Be open to putting your hair up in a ponytail for different looks.

Men

  • No makeup unless you are absolutely certain you want/need it. Generally though it’s ok to avoid it.
  • Keep any hair product to a minimum. It’s easier to add it on set rather than take it away.
  • You can be clean shaven or have some stubble. Try to keep it controlled if you have longer facial hair. You can bring a razor and shave at the studio bathroom for different looks.
  • Trim facial and nose hair appropriately. Bring a grooming kit if you need to.

Everyone

  • Wear what you would normally wear and bring a change or ten of tops. You can’t go wrong with bringing too many options. If you don’t have it you can’t wear it. There is a garment rack in the studio so bring your closet!
  • Drink lots of water the day before to keep your skin moisturized and full.
  • Get a full nights rest before to avoid dark circles or bags under the eyes.
  • Darker colors for moody images and brighter colors for vibrant/happy feel. Think about how you want to be portrayed.
  • Solid colors are a safe bet. Avoid overly bright colors like neons and reds.
  • Keep patterns to a minimum. Prints and patterns can distract from you and we want all the attention on you, not your clothing.
  • Be comfortable in clothes that you like and that fit well. If you are unhappy or uncomfortable it will show and we want to avoid that.
  • Tops that reveal shoulders are generally not helpful as it can appear that you are not wearing a shirt.
  • Too loose or baggy clothing can make you appear larger than you are.

Don’t stress over your appearance!

We are going to show the world how awesome you are.

These videos will really help you get an idea of what you will need to do. Don’t worry too much if you can’t get it right away. Practice, get a good nights rest, and drink lots of water the night before. Bring a few changes of tops and be ready to have some serious fun.
